Collection: Dale Joseph Rowe

Dale Joseph Rowe, a Scotsman who lived in Zambia for many years and has now settled in France, paints, sculpts, photographs and creates ceramics. His Family Portraits are paintings based on old family photographs taken in Africa or Scotland. Painted on square aluminum caissons, these works behave like smooth icons, in a technique similar to that of certain Figuration Narrative painters. Their colors are luminous, often arbitrary, with large areas of reflective metal left in reserve. Fragments of illegible text sometimes appear as an overlay. In this series, Dale Joseph Rowe offers us a rereading of an idealized, distanced past, where stories and conflicts have lost all acuity and relevance, leaving only reflections detached from their historical context.
